Does Your Brain Have an Oil Leak from Mind Clutter?
Recently I heard Lorin Beller Blake, of Big Fish Nation http://www.bigfishnation.com say that unfinished bold actions are like the oil leak in the Gulf: energy sucking and energy wasting. On the other hand, completing a big, bold action is a huge energy boost. What makes us mentally imitate that notorious oil leak?
A bold action is something we need to do or should do, but because of procrastination or fear we hesitate to take the next step. To learn more about bold actions, go to read Lorin’s blog post http://lorinbellerblake.com/blog/?p=632 . and see how physical clutter can get in the way of important actions.
Another thing preventing us from completing bold actions is the “oil leak” of mind clutter. Mind clutter is not the result of lack of trying. Life has become more and more complicated. Parents and children are often scheduled down to the minute. We may be shortchanged by lack of sleep. Meanwhile, we are trying to keep all our personal and business “to-do’s” in our head, plus remember where we have stashed everything we might need in our life. All this creates serious mind clutter.
Life layers add to this. What are life layers? Well, they can be anything from job change, job promotion, moving to a new house or a wedding – often fun and exciting things, but when we sandwich them in with our health issues or that of a family member’s, our mind becomes overwhelmed. Then add ordinary items in life, like the need to change out seasonal clothes, business trips, social engagements, etc. etc. etc……All these things add up to life layers which contribute to more mind clutter.
What’s the solution? One of the first things I do with a client is a mind dump. Let the mind relax by capturing all the to-do’s on paper. If some items are like tangled webs, the use of a project action plan or a white board can untangle the issues. Relief is almost immediate, as now the mind has space to think and process what is important. We can now decide how to best proceed and work out a realistic time frame. Emptying our overstuffed mental filing cabinet and doing a mind dump is like a filing cabinet purge. Finding a secure place to park ideas brings a sense of relief. Suddenly there is clear space, freedom to think. This leads to deciding what is most important and to making a step-by-step plan to get it done.
